Youth exchange EcoChallenge: Youth for Sustainable Future

Dear readers,

The youth exchange EcoChallenge: Youth for Sustainable Future was much more than an international mobility project. It became a space where young people from different countries came together to learn, reflect, create, and act for a more sustainable future. Through a rich programme of workshops, simulations, field visits, intercultural exchange, storytelling, eco-entrepreneurship activities, and digital activism sessions, the project helped transform environmental awareness into practical knowledge, stronger competences, and real motivation for action.

During the mobility, participants explored some of the most pressing environmental challenges of our time, including climate change, pollution, waste, sustainable consumption, recycling, composting, and zero-waste practices. At the same time, they did not approach these topics only in theory. The project was designed to help them connect global ecological issues with their own daily choices, local realities, and personal responsibility. Through interactive methods and non-formal education, young people gained not only a deeper understanding of sustainability, but also the confidence to become more active in their schools, youth groups, organisations, and communities.

One of the strongest outcomes of the project was the development of practical and transferable competences. Participants improved their teamwork, communication, critical thinking, problem-solving, presentation, and cooperation skills. They also strengthened more specific abilities related to leadership, advocacy, digital activism, storytelling, and eco-entrepreneurship. Many of them became more aware of their own ecological footprint and more motivated to adopt greener habits in their everyday lives. Just as importantly, they began to see themselves as young people who can influence others, initiate action, and contribute to positive change.

The impact of the project did not end with the mobility itself. In the weeks and months that followed, dissemination and follow-up activities were carried out in all partner countries. Participants and partner organisations shared the project experience, its messages, and its results through local presentations, meetings, online posts, discussions, school-based activities, and youth-led initiatives. The knowledge, ideas, and inspiration generated during the exchange were taken back to local communities and passed on to peers, teachers, youth workers, and other stakeholders.

These follow-up activities were especially important because they helped multiply the project’s impact. Instead of remaining a valuable experience only for the direct participants, EcoChallenge continued to live on through the actions and voices of the young people who took part in it. In some cases, the project even inspired concrete new initiatives. One particularly encouraging example came from Romania, where two of the participants became involved in establishing an eco club in their school – a space dedicated to debate, awareness-raising, and action around environmental and sustainable initiatives. For the partner organisations, the project also brought important long-term value. It strengthened international cooperation, improved capacities related to project management, participant support, mentoring, and non-formal education, and created a stronger foundation for future youth work on sustainability-related topics. For the hosting organisation, the project also contributed to new local partnerships, including cooperation with schools in the region, opening new opportunities for future youth and Erasmus-related activities.EcoChallenge: Youth for Sustainable Future showed that when young people are given the right space, support, and opportunity, they can move from awareness to action. The project created learning, connections, and momentum that continue beyond the mobility itself – in organisations, schools, local communities, and international partnerships. And this is perhaps its most meaningful result of all: it helped plant seeds for future action, future cooperation, and future changemakers. We warmly invite everyone to explore the project outcomes, discover the ideas created by the participants, and follow the dissemination materials shared by the partner organisations. They show the energy, creativity, and commitment that emerged during the exchange and prove that young people have an essential role to play in building a more sustainable future.
